The Bible tells us in Romans 15:4, that everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of scripture, we would find hope. One of the most valuable lessons and examples for life that we find in the Bible, is the story of Peter walking on water.
When we feel the waves of adversity crashing around us... when we hear the voices of fear, worry and uncertainty howling in the wind, it is easy to forget that Jesus is with us ...He promises to never leave or forsake us… through Him we are more than conquerors and nothing is impossible.
When Peter kept his eyes on Jesus, he was able to walk on the stormy seas, but as soon as he looked around, he began to panic and to go under. In a split second, he lost sight of The ONE that could calm the winds and the waves…he forgot that Jesus was bigger than anything that he faced…he forgot that he could do ALL things through Christ. What a lesson this is to all of us…we can overcome anything…we can face any storm…we can do things that are not possible in our own strength, when our eyes are fixed firmly on the Lord.
Henri Nouwen has said that “Christ becomes most present when we are most human.” Jesus understands and knows the struggles, heartaches, adversity, losses and grief that we face in our lives. He knows of the sleepless nights and long days. He knows our every need and He knows when we are weary and overwhelmed…and through it all He calls to us…”Look at me…keep your eyes on me…it’s not by your might or power, but by mine. Together we can do the impossible…together we can do what you can’t do yourself…together we shall overcome…Trust ME!”
It is so easy to become weary and overwhelmed when we focus on life, instead of “The Giver of Life”. If you are feeling like you are being battered by discouragement and weariness, here is a prayer for you today.
We come to you and we ask that you would help us to re-adjust our focus. Help us to remember that you are bigger than anything we face. Help us to remember that you want to carry our burdens. Help us to remember that you love our children and our loved ones even more than we do. Help us to remember that when we are weak, you are strong in us. Help us to remember that you are our shelter from the storms and nothing is impossible through you. You know our needs before we ask and you are just waiting for us to focus on you, so you can give us your peace and your comfort. You long to calm the racing thoughts in our heads...you want to silence the voice of the enemy who whispers and taunts us with words of discouragement. Help us to remember that discouragement is not from you. Help us to remember that we are more than conquerors through Jesus and the victory has already been won. You’ve told us that life will be hard, but you see us through and you give us hope that this life is just the dark before the morning. The day is coming when all will be made right and we will be joyfully overflowing with your peace as we are embraced by your nail scarred hands. When we are able to truly look into your eyes so full of love for us, we will know that everything we faced here, has faded away in the light of your glory and grace. We thank you and praise you for who you are and for all you do for us. Please go before us. Lead and guide us and make the rough roads smooth. Help us to do our best and then trust you for the rest. In the name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
