Yesterday 22-year-old singer Christina Grimme was killed by a gunman after her concert in FL. The news is shocking. Christina was a bright light for Jesus who yesterday morning, seemed to have a long life ahead of her. Things like this are a reminder that none of us are promised tomorrow and we must live life to the fullest today.
I had followed Christina for years. I appreciated her enormous talent, but more importantly, I loved her heart...I know how difficult it can be to live for Jesus in the entertainment industry... but she was a shining light that was unafraid to share her faith and she made a huge impact in the world. Her kind heart, loving spirit and incredible talent touched millions of people, young and old alike.
I know everyone is outraged and appalled by this senseless tragedy... the truth is we live in a fallen world where evil exists, but the hope we have as Christians, is one day all will be made right. Christina is the victim of a tragedy, but she is more than a victim... she is a victor. She knew where she was going and at this moment, she is at peace and filled with more joy than we can begin to imagine with her beloved Savior, Jesus.
Even without knowing Christina personally, I am confident she would want others to know the source of her hope and the reason she was unafraid of death. She knows the Lord wastes nothing. She knows He redeems what the enemy has meant for harm. Many will undoubtedly come to know Jesus through this tragedy as they seek to learn more about Christina.
As Christians, it's important that we share the hope of Jesus with others... to share the good news of the gospel...share the fact that Jesus in near to the broken-hearted and that He binds our wounds...share that He offers comfort, hope and peace that the world can't give or take away. It may seem that evil has won when tragedies like this happen, but nothing can be farther from the truth. Christina is more alive at this moment than she ever has been. She would want others to know that. That is the reason God tells us that for the Christian, we do not grieve as those who have no hope... for those left behind, we grieve for our loss... but we know that death for the believer, is actually to gain new life. Those left behind miss the physical presence of those we know and love, but they are not really gone...they have only gone before us to a place where there is no more evil, no more pain, no more suffering, no more tears and no more death. We will be reunited with those who have gone before us and we will never be separated again. That is the hope and promise that Jesus offers to those who believe in Him.
Christina was a YouTube star before she was ever a contestant on The Voice. She recorded this song, "In Christ Alone". The words of this song take on a more significant meaning in light of what has happened...I pray for Christina's family, friends and fans who are grieving...I pray for her killer's family and friends...so many struggle to find answers about why things like this happen...there are many things we will never understand this side of heaven... the truth is, there is no answer that could satisfy that question, make things better or bring any measure of comfort...the only thing that can bring comfort is to know The One who knows all the answers, and that is Jesus. May His hope, comfort and peace fill every hurting heart.
